“Fear of the Lord” and “Turn from Evil”

“Fear of the Lord,” and “Turn from Evil,” Occurrences in Psalms and Proverbs

Both of the phrases “fear of the Lord” and “turn from evil” occur many times in the Bible.  Shown below are all the occurrences  just in the books of Psalms and Proverbs.

“Fear of the Lord” in the Psalms

Psalm 19:9 the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;
the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether.

34:11 Come, O children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

111:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
all those who practice it have a good understanding.
His praise endures forever!

“Fear of the Lord” in Proverbs

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and instruction.

1:29 Because they [fools] hated knowledge
and did not choose the fear of the Lord,

2:5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.

3:7 Be not wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.

8:13 The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil.
Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.

9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

10:27 The fear of the Lord prolongs life,
but the years of the wicked will be short.

14:26 In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidence,
and his children will have a refuge.

14:27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life,
that one may turn away from the snares of death.

“Turn from Evil” in Psalms

Psalm 34:14Turn away from evil
and do good; seek peace and pursue it. 

37:27 Turn away from evil and do good;
so shall you dwell forever.

“Turn from Evil” in Proverbs

Prov. 13:19 A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul,
but to turn away from evil is an abomination to fools.

14:16 One who is wise is cautious and turns away from evil,
but a fool is reckless and careless.
